The William Jewell College men's basketball team was 2.6 seconds away from two straight upset victories. The Lewis University Flyers had other plans as the Flyers hit a buzzer beater as time expired to down Jewell 74-73 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. This loss puts the Cards at 9-11 (5-7 GLVC) on the season.
After a commanding first 8 minutes of the game, the Cardinals took a 16-7 lead and were able to hang on to a 31-27 lead at halftime.
The second half began on a 7-0 run for the Cardinals and Jewell kept building upon the lead, as it reached 15 points at the 7 minute mark, to put the Cards up 56-41. After several Jewell turnovers, the Flyers were about to bring the lead down to four with one minute left. Lewis hit some timely three pointers to bring them to within one point. After a
Christian Hildebrandt offensive foul, the Flyers got the ball back with 2.6 seconds left. Ryan Jackson hit a deep two-pointer as time expired to win the game.
Despite the loss,
Jordan Lewis shined for the Cardinals with 24 points including six three pointers.
D'Vante Mosby was able to put up 15 points and grab 12 rebounds. This gives him his sixth double-double of the season.
Next up for the Cardinals is a matchup against the University of Wisconsin- Parkside on Saturday, February 7. Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM.
