Cards Open GLVC Play with Doubleheader Sweep of St. Joseph's College

The William Jewell Cardinal baseball team opened up Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Saturday hosting St. Joseph's College for a four game weekend series at Talley Stadium.  Jewell came away with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon edging the Puma's 3-2 in game one and 1-0 in game two.

In game one the Cards got an outstanding pitching performance from Nick Farleigh who tossed a complete game giving up six hits and two runs while striking out six in nine innings of work.
Jewell clung to a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth before manufacturing two key runs in the inning.

The runs proved to be crucial as the Puma's scored two in the top of the ninth but the Cards were able to hang on for the one run victory.

In game two Bryan Porting hit a two out RBI double to give Jewell a 1-0 walk off win.  Jewell used another outstanding pitching performance this time from junior Austin Kretchmar who tossed seven shutout innings, giving up four hits while striking out four.

The Cardinals (8-2, 2-0 GLVC) will continue their series with another doubleheader with St. Joseph's tomorrow at Talley Stadium.  First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
