On Saturday, the Cardinal track & field teams played host at the Darrel Gourley Open. The annual event is normally the solo home event hosted by the Cardinals however, this year the GLVC Championships will come to Liberty on May 1st and 2nd.
The meet is named in honor of long-time Jewell coach Darrel Gourley who is a current member of the William Jewell College Athletics Hall of Fame.
There were almost 700 athletes representing 20 different colleges and universities from across the midwest which made the 2015 edition of the meet the largest in terms of participation. The women's track & field team finished second overall scoring 110 points falling only to Lincoln University of Jefferson City, Mo., who scored 189 points.
Highlights for the women's team include:
- The 4x800 Relay team of Dylan Zinszer, Elaine Barella, Lizzy Stevenson, and Jessica Goldsberry placed 1st running 9:57.35
- Margaret Perko and Julia Parker placed 1st and 2nd in the heptathlon, respectively
- Margaret Perko and Gretchen Mayes placed 1st and 2nd in the long jump
- Perko also placed 2nd in the 100 Hurdles
- Gretchen Mayes placed 5th in the 100 meters breaking her previous school record with a time of 12.31 seconds. Mayes also placed 8th in the 200 meters.
- Jessica Goldsberry placed 2nd in the 400 meters breaking the previous record held by Maggie Swenson and set in 2013
- Lainey Foltz and Liria Gutierrez placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the 3000 Steeplechase
- Lizzy Stevenson placed 2nd in the 5000 meters with a time of 18:53.01
- The 4x400 Relay of Goldsberry, Mayes, Barella, and Perko placed 3rd
- Julia Parker placed 4th in the high jump
- Shelbie White placed 6th in the pole vault
- Emmalee Hyde placed 6th in the shot put
The men finished 8th out of the field of 20 teams scoring 44 points.
Highlights for the men's team include:

Quentin Riser placed 5th in the 100 meters with a time of 10.80 seconds tying the current school record held by Ike Nwabuonwu and set in 2006

Blake Alexander placed 2nd in the 110 Hurdles with a season best and NCAA-II provisional qualifying time of 14.41 seconds. He currently leads the GLVC and is 19th in Division II. Blake also finished 4th in the 400 Hurdles.

Chaston Kome placed 4th in the 10,000 meters

Tanner Butterfield 5th in the javelin and 7th in the discus

Alec Whiteside placed 6th in the hammer throw

The track & field teams will head to Rolla, Mo., this Saturday to take part in the Dewey Allgood Invitational hosted by Missouri S&T.
