Cardinals Earn Split on Day One of South Central Classic

On day one of the South Central classic, co-hosted by Southeastern Oklahoma State and East Central University, the William Jewell volleyball team split two games to move to 2-4 overall.

In the first game of the day the Cardinals took on Cameron University (Okla.). Despite entering the contest with a 1-3 record Jewell played very competitively with the undefeated Aggies falling 20-25, 17-25, 25-23, 20-25.

Raechel Meisinger led the team with 15 kills and four aces, followed closely by Grace Miller with 11 kills and five blocks. Freshman libero Olivia Tolberd posted a season-high 22 digs with Alix Weigel having 31 assists.

The Cardinals improved their efficiency as they committed just 16 hitting errors and holding Cameron to a .217 attack percentage. However, the 16 Jewell service errors proved to be detrimental.

In the nightcap the Cardinals downed Southeastern Oklahoma State in a five set affair. Jewell lost the first two sets 18-25, 19-25 but rallied to take the final three 25-17, 25-20, 22-20.

Senior Kelsey Wagner led the team with 13 kills and 17 digs while Weigel collected 40 assists. Meisinger continued her hot start posting her sixth double-digit kill game in as many tries with 11. Kaylee Marquardt and Grace Miller grabbed nine and eight kills respectively with Tolberd posting 17 digs and six aces.

Jewell returns to action tomorrow with two games at East Central University in Ada, Okla. beginning with Southern Arkansas at 2:00 p.m. The Cardinals defeated the Muleriders in four sets last weekend in Huntsville, Ala. Jewell will wrap up the tournament with a game against the host Tigers of East Central at 7:00 p.m.
