The William Jewell volleyball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday evening by hosting Bellarmine University. The Cardinals fell in straight sets 25-20, 25-14, and 25-20. This drops Jewell to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in the GLVC. The Knights moved to 6-3 and 1-0 in league play.
In the first set Jewell jumped out to an early lead at 19-15 but a string of errors would allow Bellarmine to go on a 10-1 run to secure the first set victory.
Set two was all Knights as they totaled ten kills and just three errors.
In the final set Bellarmine again jumped out to an early lead but the Cardinals battled back late but couldn't overcome the large deficit and fell in straight sets.
Alix Weigel totaled 18 assists, 11 digs, three kills, and four aces.
Raechel Meisinger led Jewell with nine kills, followed by
Emily Burton with six. Libero
Olivia Tolberd posted a game-high 20 digs while freshman
Emery Driskel also chipped in three kills and a block.
Up next the Cardinals take on Southern Indiana on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The Screaming Eagles fell to No. 13 Rockhurst in straight sets Friday for just their second loss of the season.
