The William Jewell volleyball team opened the 2015 season with a trip to the University of Alabama-Huntsville Tournament where they fell 3-0 to Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) and 3-1 to the host team to drop to 0-2 on the young season.
In game one the Cardinals fell narrowly 25-23 in the first set before dropping the final two 25-16, 25-16.
Both teams came out firing posting their largeset kill total in the first set. For the match, the Cardinals totaled 31 kills to the Trojans' 22, however 37 hitting errors did them in as Jewell couldn't overcome a -.048 attack percentage and fell in straight sets.
Freshman
Raechel Meisinger led Jewell with 11 kills and eight digs in her debut with sophomore
Grace Miller adding seven and nine respectively. Libero
Olivia Tolberd contributed 17 digs while
Alix Weigel led the team with 20 assists.
In their second game of the day the Cardinals took on host Alabama-Huntsville. After dropping the first two sets 25-18, 25-21 Jewell took the third 25-19, before falling short in the final set 25-18.
Meisinger again led with 15 kills, eight digs, and two aces while fellow freshman
Emily Burton added nine kills. Three players totaled double-digit digs as
Codi Winslow lead with 14, followed closely by Tolberd with 13 and Weigel with 10. Weigel also contributed a career-high 32 assists and two aces.
The Cardinals will play two more games at the UAH Tournament tomorrow against Ouachita Baptist at 9:00 a.m. followed by Southern Arkansas at 3:00 p.m.
