Powers to Participate in NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar

Athletic Training Graduate Assistant Brooke Powers is one of 200-plus to be chosen to participate in the NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar in Indianapolis, Ind. this week.

Powers is in her first year at Jewell after completing her bachelor's degree in natural sciences at Bethel College in the spring of 2015. She is currently working towards a master's in exercise science while simultaneously working with Jewell student-athletes. Her primary sports include women's volleyball and softball.

"Brooke is in her first year with Jewell and is doing a great job for us. She will be a great representative at the conference." said Athletic Director Dr. Darlene Bailey.


The Emerging Leaders Seminar provides educational and transitional programming for NCAA graduate assistants and interns who have shown a profound interest in pursuing a career in college sports. After attending, participants bring back to their schools industry knowledge, leadership awareness and a broadened perspective of intercollegiate athletics. Participants gain valuable insight that helps them structure the next steps for their careers.

"The Emerging Leaders Seminar is a wonderful opportunity for young professionals working in athletics to come to the national office, form a network of like-minded peers and develop knowledge of the college sports industry at all levels," said Bernard Franklin, NCAA executive vice president of education and community engagement and chief inclusion officer.

During the 2016 seminar, participants will hear from industry leaders and experts, including: Meg Stevens, director of athletics,AverettUniversity; Donald Remy, NCAA executive vice president, law, policyandgovernance; Devin Crosby, director of athletics, Lynn University; Erin McDermott, director of athletics, University of Chicago; Holly Sheilley, vice president of athletics, Transylvania University; and Scott Wiegandt, director of athletics, Bellarmine University. The participants also have the opportunity to explore the role of NCAA governance, including the differences among the divisions and the role of conference offices. Additionally, participants will split into small groups and work together to create an operations plan that simulates the application of group dynamics and understanding the holistic operations of an athletics department.

Other scheduled speakers include: Mike Harrity, senior associate athletics director for student services, University of Notre Dame; Karina Herold, associate athletics director for external operations and senior woman administrator, Pepperdine University; Mark Jurich, senior associate athletics director for development, University of Louisville; Karen Stromme, associate athletics director for internal operations and senior woman administrator at the University of Minnesota Duluth and chair of NCAA Division II Management Council; and Yulander Wells, senior associate athletics director for finance and chief financial officer, University of South Florida.

NCAA leadership development, located in Indianapolis, coordinates and facilitates education and training for student- athletes, coaches and athletics administrators. The staff annually hosts programs, at little or no cost to members, using expert curriculum designed to enhance the well-being and personal development of college athletes.
