Cards Drop 86-76 Decision to Southern Indiana

The William Jewell Cardinals men's basketball team fell to the University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles by a score of 86-76 on Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Center.

The Screaming Eagles raced out to an early lead, controlling the game throughout the first half. They would enter the break with a 38-30 lead. Both teams showed off prolific offenses in the second half, but the Cardinals were unable to surmount a comeback.

The Screaming Eagles dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Cardinals 39-22. While the Cardinals shot 54 percent from the field and made more field goals for the game than the Screaming Eagles, Southern Indiana made up for it at the free throw line, making 26 free throws to Jewell's 13.

Darius Tomlin led the Cardinal offense with 23 points in his 40 minutes of play. Austin Regier contributed 18 points and Patrick Whelan chipped in 12 points in the losing effort. Jordan Tanner was the fourth Cardinal in double-figures with ten points and seven rebounds.

Jeril Taylor was the leading scorer for the Screaming Eagles, pouring in 32 points on the afternoon. Bobo Drummond put in 13 points to aid the Screaming Eagle victory.

Jewell drops to 5-7 overall and 0-4 in conference with the loss. With the win, Southern Indiana moves to 12-2 for the year and 4-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

The Cardinals return to action on Thursday, January 14, as they take their show to Lebanon, Illinois, where they will take on McKendree University in a GLVC matchup at 7:30 p.m.
