The William Jewell volleyball team dropped a three-set match to No. 18 Lewis University 25-16, 25-21, 25-18 on Friday evening in the Mabee Center. Jewell drops to 11-14 overall, and 4-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
In the opener the Cardinals hit just .083 compared to a .378 mark by the Flyers. Freshman
Mary Booton carried Jewell through the first set with four kills, including three consecutive points to keep the Cardinals close at 14-10. After Lewis scored five of the following seven points, a kill from
Madeline Johnson pulled Jewell within 21-16 but the Flyers recorded four consecutive points to pull out the set 25-16.
In set two, Lewis jumped out to a 13-7 lead forcing a timeout from head coach
Carolyn Raynes. The Cardinals scored five of the next six points, led by two kills from Booton to pull within 14-12. Jewell remained within striking distance, including pulling within one before three straight kills from Lewis ended the set 25-21. Jewell improved their attack percentage to .167 but could not keep pace with the Flyers.
In set three the Cardinals took an early lead at 5-4 before Lewis went on a run gaining an 19-13 advantage. Two kills from
Leslie Booth pulled the Cards within five but they could get no closer falling 25-18.
Booton led the Cardinals with nine kills on 22 attempts. Johnson followed with six kills, one ace, and one block.
Alix Weigel was tops with 12 assists while
Amy Lindhorst added 11.
Olivia Tolberd recorded a game-high 16 digs.
Jewell will be back in action on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. as they host Wisconsin Parkside.
