The William Jewell volleyball team dropped their fifth consecutive game as they fell to Wisconsin Parkside in four sets by scores of 25-18, 24-26, 25-27, 25-27. The Cardinals fall to 11-15 overall and 4-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
In the opener the two teams played nearly deadlocked until Jewell recovered from a two-point deficit to pull ahead by two 17-15 behind a kill from
Olivia Johnston and an ace from
Alix Weigel. From there, Jewell rolled, outscoring the Rangers 9-3 to win the opening set 25-18. The Cardinals came out with a hot .341 attack percentage in the opening set led by four kills a piece from Johnston and
Grace Miller.
In set two Jewell jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, aided by four errors from the Rangers. UWP came storming back to tie the game at ten before another small Cardinal run pulled them ahead 19-14, again aided by three Parkside errors. From there, UWP went on a 10-3 run to gain a 24-22 advantage. The Cardinals were helped back into a tie as the Rangers committed two errors to knot the set at 24 before two kills ended the set and tied the match at one.
After the intermission, the Cardinals again jumped out to a six point lead at 17-11 only to see UWP crawl back in to tie the game at 23. A service error gave Jewell set point but a kill from the Rangers Katie Adams knotted the score at 25. The Rangers scored three conseuctive to complete the comeback, winning the set 27-25 to put Jewell in a 2-1 hole.
Set four saw the Cardinals struggle early, falling behind 11-7, before mounting a rally, that ended with Paige Cuningham's kill pulling her team within one at 12-11. Three kills and a Cardinal error gave UWP the lead again at 18-14 before Jewell strung together another four point rally to get within 21-18 on four Ranger errors. Following an injury, sophomore
Emery Driskel stepped in and helped Jewell ultimately tie the game at 24 after a kill and two blocks. A service error by Jewell and an attack error by the Rangers knotted the score again at 25. The two teams rallied back and forth before two kills from UWP ended the set 27-25 and the match 3-1.
Overall, Jewell was led by Cunningham's 15 kills, including five in set three. Miller followed with nine kills on 18 attempts with no errors, while adding three blocks.
Olivia Tolberd led three players in double-figures defensively collecting 24 digs while
Alix Weigel added 13 and Johnston 12. Weigel posted a double-double as she also chipped in 21 assists.
The Cardinals will be back in action for their final non-conference match up of the season on Tuesday as they host Central Missouri at 7:00 p.m. Prior to first serve Jewell will take time to honor seniors
