For the first time since joining the NCAA II and just the third time in over a decade a William Jewell volleyball player has recorded 1,000 career digs as
Olivia Tolberd surpassed the mark on Tuesday against No. 16 Central Missouri. The Cardinals fell to the Jennies 25-14, 25-18, 25-23. The loss drops Jewell to 11-16 overall while UCM moves to 18-8 on the year.
The Jennies led early and often through the first two sets, taking a commanding 20-9 lead in the opener, following a 12-4 run, before putting the set away 25-14.
In set two the Cards and UCM battled point for point before a six point run, aided by five Jewell errors, gave the Jennies a 17-11 advantage. Jewell closed the gap to 23-17 behind kills from
Grace Miller and
Paige Cunningham before a kill from UCM's Maddie Jones and another Cardinal error put Jewell in a two-set hole going into the break.
In set three the Cardinals again fell behind 17-11 before mounting a rally, scoring six of the next eight points behind kills from Cunningham and
Madeline Johnson to pull within 19-17. Just as it looked at though UCM would pull away to win the set easily, Jewell again stormed back behind two more kills from Miller and Cunningham and were aided by two Jennie errors to tie the set at 21. Two more kills from Jones gave UCM a 23-21 advantage only to see the Cards once again pull to a tie at 23 all. Unfortunately two Jewell errors gave the Jennies the 25-23 set and ultimately the match 3-0.
Jewell struggled offensively for majority of the match, recording an attack percentage in the negative during the first two sets before narrowly eclipsing the even mark as they posted a .029 clip in set three. Jewell was led by Miller and Cunningham who each posted seven kills and were two of just three players to hit above .100 at .333 and .192 respectively. Miller also added five blocks including two solos.
Tolberd needed just ten digs entering the game to reach No. 1,000 for her young career and totaled 12 on the night to lead Jewell.
It was also senior night for the Cardinals as
Amy Lindhorst and
Ariana Jacquez were honored prior to first serve. Lindhorst posted eight assists and five digs while Jacquez, making just her second career start and made five attacks.
Jewell returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend as they travel to Saint Joseph's on Friday evening followed by a match up with Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon.
