Football Falls 55-15 to Quincy on Homecoming

Quincy senior wide receiver Eric Poindexter shattered the Great Lakes Valley Conference single-game receiving record on Saturday, and he tallied 317 yards on 20 catches to help the Hawks roll past William Jewell 55-14 in Liberty, Mo.

The loss keeps the Cardinals winless at 0-6 overall and 0-4 in league play.  Quincy improves to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the GLVC.

Poindexter's record setting performance also included three touchdowns as he tallied 13 catches and 154 yards in the first half.

After a quick three and out to start the game by the Cardinal offense Jewell held Quincy to what appeared to be a stop on third down at midfield.  The Cardinals, however, were called for a personal foul that kept the Hawks drive alive and six plays later Poindexter scored his first touchdown of the game from 19-yards out.

Quincy got the ball back and drove 86 yards in 14 plays as running back James Jaylan extended the Hawks' lead to 13-0 after the failed extra point.

The Cardinals then responded getting all the way to the Quincy seven before quarterback Brad Strauss, returning from his four game injury, was picked off by DT Christiansen who then returned it 80-yards to the Cardinal 19-yard line.

Two plays later Robbie Kelly found Poindexter again to put Quincy up 20-0.

Jewell's offense once again came alive and this time found the end zone when Darmarcus Robinson scampered in from 14-yards out to cut the Hawks lead to 20-7.

The Cardinals had another shot of momentum fall by the wayside on their next drive when Brandon Womack's 47-yard field goal was blocked and Quincy went into halftime with the 20-7 lead.

The Hawks came out of the locker room on a mission as they drove 69 yards in seven plays as running back Dominique Bobo rushed in from 13-yards out that extended Quincy's lead 27-7.

Two drives later the Cardinals stopped the Hawks on fourth down and drove all the way to the Quincy 10 only to turn it over again as Strauss was picked off at the one-yard line.

Four plays later Kelly hooked up with Poindexter again this time for 77-yards and a score that put Quincy up 34-7.

Jewell again drove the field as the third quarter was winding down and again saw their momentum slip away when Strauss was picked off at the Hawks' one-yard line.

Turnovers again haunted the Cardinals, when after a Quincy missed field goal attempt Strauss was sacked and lost the ball and the Hawks took over at the Cardinal 21-yard line.

Kelly this time found his tight end Owen Schoenenberger for the first of two touchdowns on the day that gave Quincy a commanding 41-7 lead.

Jewell's Antony Mullins briefly gave the homecoming crownd something to cheer for when he took the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for Jewell's last score of the game.

Quincy would tack on two more scores which produced the 55-14 outcome.

Kelly would finish the day behind center 30-49 with 447 yards passing and five touchdowns.

Strauss finished 13-32 for 179 yards and four interceptions.  All told, the Hawks produced 589 yards of total offense to William Jewell's 315.

The Cardinals will continue their home stand next Saturday as they take on nationally ranked Southwest Baptist University.   Kick-off is slated for 12:00 p.m.
