The William Jewell College men's basketball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play this evening as they hosted Quincy University at the Mabee Center.

The Hawks came away with a dominating 85-60 win that improved their record to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the GLVC. The Cards fall to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in league play.Â

Quincy roared out to a 12-0 lead before
Patrick Whelan hit a three with 17:12 to play for Jewell's first points.Â

The Hawks controlled the first ten minutes shooting 58 percent from the field and 60 percent from three-point land and led 26-12 at the second media time out of the half.Â

Quincy's Von Washington had 17 points including 5-6 from behind the arc in the first half.

The Hawks shot a blistering 65 percent and 68 percent from three-point land and led 55-34 at that half.Â

Quincy went on a 16-6 run to start the second half and built a 31 point lead which ended up being too much to overcome for Jewell.

The Hawks had five players score in double figures including Washington who led all scores with 24.Â

Matt Lassen led the Cardinals with 13 points and
Larry Fitzgerald came off the bench and scored 12.Â

The Cards will continue GLVC play on Saturday when they play host to Truman State University. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
