Truman Upends Cards 95-80

The William Jewell College men's basketball team welcomed Truman State to the Mabee Center on Saturday in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

Two big runs in the first and second half fueled the Bulldogs to a 95-80 win to improve to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in GLVC play.  The Cards fall to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.

The Bulldogs came out on a 12-2 run to start the game.  The Cards got a spark off the bench from junior center Emil Ostafiiciuc who came in and scored five unanswered points to cut the lead to 12-7.

As the half went on the Cardinals had a tough time containing Truman's Nathan Messer who shot six for eight from three-point land in the first half and helped the Bulldogs establish a 46-38 lead at the half.

Truman began the half with a 20-7 run in the first six minutes of the half to build their biggest lead of the game and led by 21.

The Cards answered with a 7-0 run of their own and cut the lead to 14 with 10 minutes to play before Truman answered back with two straight three pointers.

Jewell used another 8-0 run off fueled by a Jorge Perez-Laham's two three pointers and jumper inside the free throw line by Matt Lassen which cut the Bulldog lead to 12 with 7:38 to play.

Truman again answered back with a three before the Cards closed to within 10 with 2:30 to play.

The Bulldogs would hang on from there for the win.

Messer would lead all scores with 28 while teammate Connor Erickson contributed 18.  Truman also drained 13 three-pointers on the afternoon.

Patrick Whelan led the Cards with 24 points and seven rebounds.  Ostafiiciuc scored 13 off the bench for Jewell.

The Cardinals will face off against GLVC rival Rockhurst University on Wednesday, December 7 in Kansas City, Mo.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
