The William Jewell College women's basketball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play this evening as they hosted Quincy University at the Mabee Center.

William Jewell came away with a 61-43 win and improves to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in GLVC play. The Hawks fall to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in league play.

The Cardinals came out of the gate on fire from three-point land and built an early 8-2 lead before Quincy went on a run to cut it to 8-6. Jewell found their stroke again and led 15-9 after the first quarter of play.

The Cardinals continued their hot shooting from behind the arc in the second quarter and led 29-22 at the half. The Cards shot 42.9 percent from three-point land for the half and displayed tremendous defense in forcing 12 Quincy turnovers.Â

The Cards continued their hot shooting and smothering defense in the second half forcing nine more turnovers and built a lead as big as 19 with one minute to play.

Jewell was led by
Maddie Nelson with 15 points and
Kayla Harrell contributed 12.Â
Chris Keys was the other Cardinal in double figures with 11.

The Cards will continue GLVC play on Saturday when they play host to Truman State University. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
