The William Jewell men's basketball team fell on the road Thursday night at Truman State 98-83, to drop to 8-16 overall, 3-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Bulldogs improve to 18-8, and 10-6 in the GLVC.
Both teams came out hot as the Cardinals opened the game shooting 48 percent from the floor including hitting 7-16 shots from behind the three-point line. The Bulldogs went 6-12 from behind the arc shooting 56 percent in the opening 20 minutes.
In the second half Truman opened up their largest lead of the game, of 16 points, at the 13:30 mark before it ended on a 10-0 run by the Cardinals sparked by five points from junior
Larry Fitzgerald. Back-to-back three pointers opened the lead back up to 14 as the Bulldogs kept the Cards at arms length the rest of the way.
Despite the loss Jewell did shoot an impressive 49 percent from the floor and hit 12 three-point shots, four each from Fitzgerald,
Patrick Whelan, and
Darius Tomlin. The Cardinals also outrebounded Truman State 31-23 but were hindered by missed free throws and costly turnovers. Both teams attempted 23 free shots with the Bulldogs hitting 20 while Jewell managed just 15. The Cards was also forced into 17 turnovers while the Bulldogs committed just seven of thier own.
Tomlin led three Cardinals in double-figures with 25 on 4-8 from behind the arc, while also pulling down seven rebounds and three steals. Fitzgerald added 17 while also hitting four treys while Whelan posted 15 points and three assists.
The Cardinals return home for the final time on Saturday as they play host to Quincy University at 3:00 p.m. in the Mabee Center. Prior to warmups for the men's game head coach
