Cardinals Fall to Quincy 89-80 In Home Finale

The William Jewell men's basketball team dropped the 2015-16 home finale as they fell 89-80 to Quincy University on Saturday afternoon in the Mabee Center. The loss drops the Cardinals to 8-17 overall, 3-14 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, with one game remaining on the schedule.

Jewell trailed by as many as ten midway through the first half before a 21-12 run to close the period brought the Cards back within three at 38-35 heading into the intermission.

After allowing Quincy to push the lead back to eight early in the second half, head coach Larry Holley called a timeout to refocus his team. The Cardinals responded by scoring eight consecutive points to tie the game at 43 capped by a three point shot from Larry Fitzgerald. Over the next three minutes the two teams traded points before a 14-8 run by the Hawks pushed the margin back to nine with under nine minutes to play.

The Cardinals remained close, cutting the lead to four on two occassions but Quincy went 13-23 from the free throw line to keep Jewell just far enough away.

In a contest that saw 52 fouls and 71 total free throws attempted, it was the Hawks who came away with the edge going 25-39 from the line, compared to Jewell's 20-32. Quincy also had the advantage from the floor at 49 percent but the Cardinals went 6-19 from three point land for 32 percent compared to QU's 22 percent clip. Jewell also outrebounded their guest 41-36.

In his final game in the Mabee Center senior guard Darius Tomlin led the Cardinals with 29 points on 9-18 shooting, and 9-11 from the free throw line. Patrick Whelan added 14 points while Javier De La Blanca chipped in 13 and pulled down eight rebounds.

The Cardinals were unable to stop Quincy's big man Evan McGaughey as he poured in 35 points and nine rebounds.

Jewell will travel to Rockhurst to face the Hawks on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. to wrap up the regular season schedule.
