Box Score 2 The William Jewell softball team dropped two games to wrap up the Lewis Dome Invitational on Saturday evening in Rosemont, Ill. The Cardinals fell 5-3 to Walsh University followed by a 9-3 setback to Grand Valley State. In total only four of the 14 runs scored by the opponents were earned due in large part to seven errors committed by the Cardinals. Jewell finishes tournament play with an overall record of 6-6.
GAME 1In the opener Walsh jumped on top early as three singles quickly led to a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals matched the Cavs one run as they tied the game on an sacrifice fly from
Brooke Bernard.
Bernard came through again with an RBI triple to the right centerfield wall to give Jewell a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning, only to see Walsh tie the game in the top of the fourth on a RBI fielder's choice from AbbieYaugher.
The score held until the top of the seventh inning when a walk, a single, and an error loaded the bases for Walsh. A sacrifice fly and single up the middle brough in two more runs for the Cavaliers to push the game to 5-2.
Maddie Greenstreet reached on an error in the bottom of the frame and scored on another RBI single from Bernard to give Jewell a new life. Unfortunately the Cardinals loaded the bases with two outs before a strikeout killed the rally.
Bernard and
Nona Pauline each posted three hits, with Bernard owning all three RBI. Greenstreet scored two runs.
Senior
Shelby McGraw took the loss despite allowing just one earned run on nine hits.
GAME 2In the nightcap, Jewell and Grand Valley State reamined scoreless until the fourth inning when the Lakers put a run on the board on an RBI single from Rachel Terwillinger. The Cardinals matched the run with one of their own in the bottom of the inning as McGraw singled through the right side with an error on the ensuing play allowing
Phoebe Dabbour to score.
Grand Valley State added a run in the top of the fifth that was again matched by Jewell.
Aerin Creamer led off the inning with a single up the middle and was pinch ran for by
Megan Barnes. Greenstreet reached base and advanced to second on an error by the Laker left fielder allowing Barnes to score. Pauline then singled up the middle to score Greenstreet and give Jewell their first lead of the game.
Things began to unravel in the top of the sixth inning as the Lakers added two runs on two singles, a walk, and an error to take a 5-3 lead. In the top of the seventh Grand Valley tacked on four more runs after a walk and two errors loaded the bases with no outs. Two singles from Chelsea Horvath and Kaylie Rhynard pushed the score to final margin of 9-3
Bernard continued her torrid start to her sophomore season posting two hits, along with
Aerin Creamer.
McGraw was saddled with the loss to drop to 4-3 on the season after allowing five runs (one earned) on three hits in one and two-third innings of relief.
Up next the Cardinals will travel to Maryville, Mo. on March 8 to take on the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State.
