The William Jewell College Baseball team hosted Washburn University today at Talley Stadium on the Jewell campus in Liberty. Jewell was able to come away with a 7-6 win in the bottom of the 11th to move to 9-6 on the season while Washburn falls to 10-9. The Cardinals have also now won three straight.
The Ichabods jumped out to a 3-0 lead with single runs in the second, fourth and sixth.
Jewell's bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth when Drew Standifer led things off with a solo home run to right field. Garret McKinzie followed with a double and
Andrew Miller reached on an error by the pitcher. After a sacrifice fly to score McKinzie,
Dylan Christie walked and
Matej Sucha followed with a double that scored Christie to even things 3-3.
Coleman Waheed then scorched a two-run double to center field that put the Cards up 5-3. Standifer reached again in the seventh and was plated home on a squeeze play from
Dane Erbst and Jewell led 6-3 heading to the top of the eighth. Washburn rallied in the eighth to tie the score 6-6.
The score remained tied at 6 until the bottom of the 11th inning when
Mike Leeper led off with a double. After two quick outs and a walk
Andrew Miller singled home Leeper for the walk off win.
Miller led the Cards going 2-6 with an RBI and a run scored. Erbst was 1-5 with two RBI's and Waheed also collected two RBI's for Jewell.
Zach Hutcherson (1-1) picked up the win in relief.
Brendan Beatty started and threw five innings giving up five hits and three runs to go along with four walks. Cardinal relievers tossed six innings total only giving up two hits and one run.
Jewell will be back in action tomorrow as they host Bemidji State University at 2:00 p.m.
