The William Jewell College baseball team was edged 5-4 in a nine inning game today against Washburn University in Topeka, Kan.
Jewell got on the board in the top of the first thanks to a two-run homerun from
Garrett McKinzie. Jewell took a 3-1 lead after an RBI single from
Brendan Carney in the second only to see Washburn tie things up with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Carney doubled in the fourth and was driven home on a single from
Drew Standifier and Jewell led 4-3 until the bottom of the sixth. The Ichabods tied the game with a single run in the sixth then scored the go ahead run in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead. Jewell had a leadoff double to start the eighth but Washburn was able to stop the threat and held on for the narrow one-run win.
Offensively, McKinzie and Carney both finished with two hits and drove in three of Jewell's four runs.Â
Garrett Smith started for Jewell and went 5.1 innings giving up 9 hits, four runs and one walk while striking out 8.Â
Zach Hutcherson (0-1) took the loss in relief of Smith.Â
The Cardinals (6-6) will travel to Lebanon, Ill., to take on McKendree University on Friday, March 11 with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m.
