Cardinals Hang On For Wild 13-12 Win Over Newman

The William Jewell College baseball team hosted their final mid-week home game of 2016 on Wednesday.  Jewell welcomed the Newman University Jets to Talley Stadium in a rematch from April 6 when the Cards fell 12-6 in Wichita.

Jewell did get their revenge winning 13-12 to improve to 22-12 overall.

The Jets got on the board in the top of the second when they plated home two.

Jewell exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the third.  Dylan Christie had a two-run double and Jesse Gray had a run scoring double for Jewell in the inning.

Newman came back and plated home four runs in the fourth to cut Jewell's lead to 9-7 and also chased Jewell starter Dylan Pollock out of the game.   The Jets added five runs in the fifth to retake the lead 11-9.

The Cardinals then began a three run rally in the seventh after two outs.  Dylan Christie helped his cause as he was the pitcher of record by lacing a two-run double to right center field to tie the game.  With a runner on third and two out Jesse Gray surprised the Jets with a bunt that scored Christie and put Jewell up 12-11 heading into the eighth inning.

The Cards tacked on an insurance run, which proved to be needed, in the bottom of the eighth aided by a throwing error from the Newman third baseman to take a 13-11 lead.

Christie finished the day 3-for-4 on the day with four RBI's and two runs scored.   Travis Foerschler was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Vijay Patel earned the win in relief, pitching two innings and giving up two hits and was the only Cardinal hurler not to give up a run.  Chris Mancha came in and after giving up a run earned his fifth save of the year.

The Cardinals will return to Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Friday as they begin a four game series with Maryville University in St. Louis.  First pitch Friday is set for 12:00 p.m.
