Baseball Swept By Maryville On Saturday

The William Jewell College baseball team lost both games of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday to host Maryville University – dropping the opener 9-4, before falling in the second game, 9-8. The losses drop the Cardinals to 22-14 (7-7 GLVC), while the Saints improve to 15-19 (6-8 GLVC) after the sweep.

Maryville scored single runs in the first and fourth innings of the first game.  The Cardinals responded with a single run in the sixth and took a 3-1 lead in the seventh on Coleman Waheed's two-run homerun.

The Saints took the lead once again in the bottom of the seventh,  when they plated home three runs and put the game away with four runs in the eighth.
Waheed finished the game 1-for-4 with three RBIs, while Jesse Gray was 4-for-4 with two runs scored.

On the mound, senior Austin Kretchmar suffered his second loss of the year as he falls to 6-2 after hurling all 6 1/3 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on 11 hits with five strikeouts.

The Saints struck quickly in the second game as well, as they scored a single run in the first and two in the second.

Waheed delivered for the Cardinals again with another two-run shot that closed Maryville's lead to 3-2 in the third inning.  Dylan Christie tied the game 3-3 with a solo shot in the fourth before the Saints rallied with four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Jewell then scored four runs on five hits in the top of the sixth to close Maryville's lead to 9-7.  In the top of the seventh, Waheed continued his power surge with a solo home run that drew the Cardinals to within one.  The Saints were able to retire the Cardinals in order after that to hang on for the one run win.

Waheed again was the offensive leader going 2-for-3 with three RBI's while Christie was 2-for-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored.

Garret Smith (2-2) took the loss and he tossed 4 1/3 innings giving up seven hits, six runs (four earned) while striking out five.

The Cardinals and Saints will close out their four game set tomorrow in St. Louis.  First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
