Cardinals Earn GLVC Sweep of No. 10 Quincy

The William Jewell College baseball team swept a pair of games from No. 10 Quincy University on Friday afternoon 11-8 and 7-5 to move to 29-19 overall, 14-12 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Garrett McKinzie put Jewell on top early with a no-doubt home run to left field in the bottom of the first inning.

Dylan Christie followed suit with a solo shot of his own in the following frame to give Jewell two hits and two runs. A hit-by-pitch, single, and fielder's choice then loaded the bases with no outs as the Cards scored two on back-to-back sacrifice flys from Coleman Waheed and Drew Standifer. Mike Leeper added the final run of the frame scoring on a single from McKinzie to put Jewell up 5-0 after just two innings.

The two teams traded zeros over the next two innings until the Hawks finally broke onto the board with three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth to pull within 5-3.

McKinzie swung the momentum back in favor of of the Cardinals as he blasted his second solo shot of the game to push Jewell back to a 6-3 advantage.

The Cardinals struck again in the sixth with a run as Gray scored on another sac fly from Waheed.

In the bottom of the seventh Dane Erbst got in on the home runs blasting a three run shot followed by another solo long ball from Christie to give Jewell a comfortable 11-3 lead.

The Hawks didn't go quietly however as they took advantage of shaky pitching by Jewell to plate four runs in the eighth inning and pull within 11-8. Vijay Patel came on to pitch for Jewell and stranded the bases loaded to end the threat.

Patel finished the game after going one and one-third innings, allowing one run on one hit.

Senior Austin Kretchmar earned his eighth win of the season going seven frames, giving up three earned runs on six hits while striking out six.

In the nightcap the Hawks quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a half inning but Jewell regained the momentum as Erbst blasted his second three run home run of the day scoring McKinzie and Andrew Miller who each reached on singles.

In the top of the fourth the Hawks tied the game at three on a single by Dominic Miles before Brendan Beatty came on in relief to force a pop up and strand the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the fifth, Waheed singled down the left field line and was moved over on the sacrifice from Standifer. McKinzie continued his hot day and came through with a single to left field to put the Cards up 4-3. Two more runs scored off singles from Erbst and Gray followed by a wild pitch to put Jewell up 7-3.

Quincy scored two runs in the top of the sixth to pull within two but Patel entered in the seventh and slammed the door to earn his first save of the year.

Beatty also earned his first win of the season going two and one-third innings of work, allowing two runs on four hits. Starter Zach Hutcherson went three and two-thirds, giving up three earned runs on seven hits while striking out three.
