Alexander Earns Second GLVC Track Athlete of the Year Honor

The William Jewell College track and field teams wrapped up the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships on Saturday evening where the women placed fourth and the men seventh. Lewis University won both the team titles while UIndy was the runner-up for the men and Bellarmine edged the Greyhound women for second place.

Jewell's Blake Alexander went a long way towards capping a tremendous season as he was named the GLVC Men's Track Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season. Alexander qualified for the finals in the 110 meter hurdles on Friday as he won his heat and set a new GLVC record. On Saturday afternoon in the finals, he again set the mark posting a time of 13.88 to break a record that stood for 16 years, for the second time in two days. But that wasn't all for the junior as he went on to win the 400 meter hurdles late in the day with a time of 53.79.

Gretchen Mayes also enjoyed a solid day earning points in three different events led by a runner-up mark in the women's 100 meter dash with a time of 12.10 seconds. This time was good enough for a second team All-GLVC honor. Mayes was also fourth in the 200 meter (25.30) and the long jump (5.64 meters).

Senior Jessica Goldsberry was third in the 400 meter run with a time of 56.96 while she, along with Mayes, Margaret Perko, and Shelby Ridenhour teamed up for a third place mark in the 4x100 relay.

Perko earned a second place finish in the women's 100 meter hurdles with a provisional qualifying mark of 14.29 seconds.

Fabio Kammler also grabbed a fourth place finish in the men's 200 meter dash with a time of 21:58 seconds.

In total the Cardinals earned three individual titles, two from Alexander and one from Perko, while earning six All-GLVC nods.

Jewell will take part in the Emporia State Qualifier next Saturday and look to improve on national qualifying marks before sending a select group of student-athletes to Bradenton, Fla. for the NCAA II national championships.
