Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hot Start Leads Cards to 89-62 Win Over Avila

The William Jewell men's basketball team snapped a nine-game losing streak with a big win over Avila University on Monday evening in the Mabee Center. The Cardinals jumped out to a large lead early in the contest and never looked back as they overpowered the Eagles 89-62 to move to 4-10 on the season.

Avila took a 5-4 lead at the 17:25 mark of the first half but that would be the last time they would hold an advantage as Jewell went on a 44-11 run over the next 15 minutes on their way to 56-22 halftime lead.

In the opening half, the Cards held Avila to just nine field goals including just one three point shot. Meanwhile, Jewell shot 58 percent from the floor and 57 percent from behind the arc as they connected on eight of 14.

In the second half it was the Eagles who held the hot hand, shooting 41 percent, but the early lead was too much as the Cardinals cruised to the 27 point win.

The Jewell bench helped extend and maintain the advantage for much of the night, led by Matt Lassen's game-high 19 points, as the senior hit five of 13 three point attempts, while also pulling down six boards. Along with Lassen, three other Cardinals finished in double-figures including Emil Ostafiicuic with 14, Jorge Perez-Laham with 12, and Larry Fitzgerald with ten.

Easton Koch also came off the bench and scored five points while dishing out three assists and swiping two steals. Senior Simon Zajicek hit two three point shots late to finish with a season-high six points

Up next the Cardinals return to Great Lakes Valley Conference action as they travel to Drury on Thursday followed by a match up with Missouri S&T on Saturday in Rolla, Mo.
