Patrick Whelan posted a game high 18 points but it was not enough as the Cardinals dropped their seventh straight in a 88-71 loss to No. 17 Southern Indiana on Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action in Evansville, Ind. The Screaming Eagles improve to 13-0 overall and 3-0 in the GLVC, while the Cardinals fall to 3-8 and 0-3 in league play.
Whelan shot 7-of-12 from the floor and scored 12 of his points in the first half.
Jorge Perez-Laham added 17 points, while
Larry Fitzgerald contributed 12 points. USI held a 46-32 edge on the boards and shot 48% for the game. Jewell connected on 43% but only hit 5-of-22 from beyond the arc.
After an grabbing an early lead Jewell found themselves down by as many as 11 in the first half and went into halftime down eight.
The Cards got as close as seven in the second half before USI went on a run which put them up by 22 and put the game out of reach.
The Cardinals were able to hold USI's Jeril Taylor to only 17 points. Taylor came into the contest having won the GLVC Player of the Week award for the past two weeks.
The schedule does not get any easier for Jewell as they travel to Louisville, K.Y. to take on No. 13 Bellarmine on Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
