The William Jewell volleyball team opened the 2017 Midwest Region Crossover with a sweep of Purdue Northwest by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-20. With the win the Cardinals move to 6-13 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- SET ONE: The Cardinals opened a 17-12 lead before the Lions pulled within one at 23-22. Back-to-back kills from Madeline Johnson and Stefanie Richterkessing gave Jewell the opening set 25-22 win.
- SET TWO: Jewell again opened a lead only to have PNW crawl back late in the set. A kill from Maddie Wingert and an error by the Lions sealed the set 25-20 to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
- SET THREE: Set three was a back-and-forth affair before the Cardinals were able to separate themselves on consecutive kills from Grace Miller and Wingert. Even after a small 3-0 run by PNW, a kill from Johnson ended the set 25-20 and gave Jewell the sweep.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- The Cardinals posted a balanced attack led by Wingert's nine kills, while Miller had eight, and Jenna Rau seven.
- Rau also posted four blocks followed by three a piece from Miller and Johnson.
- Olivia Tolberd posted a game-high 18 digs while Richterkessing added 13.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals collected 43 kills on a .153 attack percentage compared to the Lions' 26 total kills.
- Jewell also posted more than 15 more digs than their opponent with 61.
