The William Jewell College football team traveled to Bolivar, Mo., today to take on Southwest Baptist University in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.  The Cardinals turned the ball over four times in the first half and fell to the Bearcats 52-29.  The loss drops Jewell to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in league play. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
    1Q (9:04) SBU took a 3-0 lead when Jordan LeClair drilled a 26-yard field goal.
    1Q (2:26) Jerminic Smith increased the Bearcat lead to 10-0 when he rushed in from two yards out.
    2Q (13:01) TJ Edwards put Southwest Baptist up 17-0 when he rushed in from 15 yards.   
    2Q (8:59) The Cards responded with a drive of 79 yards in 7 plays that was capped off by a 30-yard touchdown run from quarterback Brad Strauss which cut the lead to 17-7.
    2Q (2:13) Edwards found Cassian Foreman from 17 yards out three plays after taking over from an interception and went into halftime leading 24-7.
    3Q (7:30) The Cards stopped SBU on their opening drive then drove the length of the field where Will Schneider who came in for an injured Strauss rushed in from three yards and cut the lead to 24-14.
    3Q (6:37) Edwards completed a 10-yard pass to Kendrick Payne who made a few moves and outran the Cardinal defense 39 yards to the endzone that put SBU up 31-14.
    3Q (5:20) Strauss returned to the game and continued to hurt the Bearcats with his legs rushing in from 27-yards out and Jewell trailed 31-21 after the PAT.
    4Q (13:30) Edwards again connected with Smith this time from 22 yards away and SBU lead 38-21.
    4Q (8:44) Quilan Gaines picked off Strauss and took it 75 yards for the pick six and SBU increased their lead to 45-21. 
    4Q (4:38) Dylan Mountain added to the SBU lead rushing in from three yards out that put SBU up 52-21.     
    4Q (2:44) Schneider added another rushing touchdown for Jewell and Mask rushed in the two-point conversion that produced the final 52-29 score.  
 
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
 
    Strauss led the team in rushing with 136 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
    Quayde Baumann had 15 tackles to lead the defense.
 
 
TURNING POINT
 
The Bearcats forced four Cardinal turnovers in the first half including a fumble recovery on Jewell's first drive of the game.  Jewell finished the game with six turnovers. 
 
YOU SHOULD NOTE
 The Cardinals out rushed SBU 233-187 but the Bearcats threw for 402 yards while Jewell threw for 240.  SBU also was able to overcome 12 penalties for 112 yards.

Jewell will continue GLVC play when the host Truman State on Saturday, October 21.  Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
