The William Jewell volleyball team fell 3-2 to Southern Indiana on Friday evening in the Mabee Center by scores of 25-23, 14-25, 25-23, 18-25, 16-18. The loss drops the Cardinals to 9-16 overall and 3-9 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- SET ONE: Jewell and USI traded points until late in the opening set. The Eagles gained a four point advantage before the Cardinals came storming back to knot things up at 23. A kill from Paige Cunningham and a USI error gave Jewell the set one win 25-23.Â
- SET TWO: The Cardinals fell into a deep hole in set two, trailing by as many as 11 before falling 25-14.Â
- SET THREE: After the intermission, the Cardinals once again rallied from a late deficit. Down by six (18-12) the Cards went on a 9-4 run, led by three kills from Raechel Meisinger, to tie the set 22-22. The Eagles went back on top by one only to see Jewell score the next three points and take the set 25-23.Â
- SET FOUR: Jewell trailed early in the fourth set and the USI lead swelled to as many as 12 late. The Cardinals went on a quick 6-3 run to pull with 24-18 but a kill from USI sealed the set. Â
- SET FIVE: The Eagles came out strong in the finale and grabbed a 13-9Â advantage behind two errors from the Cardinals. Jewell rallied and scored five of the next six points on kills from Olivia Tolberd, Elizabeth Quinn and Madeline Johnson to tie the set at 14-all. The two teams traded points until USI got scored back-to-back points to slip away with the set 18-16 and the match 3-2.Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals hit just .188 in the fifth set compared to .348 by Southern Indiana.
- Overall the Eagles posted a .314 attack percentage compared .180 by Jewell.Â
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Meisinger and Jenna Rau led the Cardinals with 13 kills a piece while Johnson added 11.Â
- Quinn posted eight kills on a team-best .375 attack percentage.Â
- Alix Weigel had 34 assists and Megan Rhule added 26.Â
- Defensively, Tolberd collected a game-high 30 digs while Codi Winslow and Paige Cunningham each chipped in 11.Â
