Cards Nearly Pull Upset of GLVC West Leader Rockhurst

The William Jewell volleyball nearly pulled off the upset of Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division leader (RV) Rockhurst on Tuesday night in Kansas City. The Cardinals fell 3-2, by scores of 25-22, 14-25, 25-19, 21-25, 9-15 to fall to 10-17 overall and 4-10 in GLVC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SET ONE: In the opener the Cardinals led by as many as six on their way to the 25-22 win. The Hawks pulled within one at 21-20 before Elizabeth Quinn scored three of Jewell's next four points to give the Cards the set one victory.
  • SET TWO: The Hawks responded by using a late 9-1 win to take set two 25-14.
  • SET THREE: After the intermission, the Cardinals used a 8-1 run, led by three kills from Paige Cunningham, to claim the 25-19 win and grab a 2-1 set advantage.
  • SET FOUR: Jewell let two different four point leads slip away in set four falling 25-21. With a 20-19 advantage the Hawks' Grace Carter posted four consecutive kills to give Rockhurst a 23-21 advantage. Two consecutive errors by the Cardinals gave the Hawks the 25-21 win and forced the fifth and deciding set.
  • SET FIVE: In the finale, the Hawks used a late 5-1 run to turn a two point advantage into a six point lead. The Cardinals got a kill from Cunningham to make it 14-9 but a Rockhurst kill allowed the Hawks to narrowly escape with a 3-2 win.

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Cunningham posted a double-double with a season high 19 kills and 14 digs while Quinn added 14 kills.
