Miners Rally to Down Jewell, 3-2

The William Jewell volleyball team grabbed a 2-0 lead but couldn't hold off a Missouri S&T rally and fell in five sets by scores of 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 18-25, 11-15. The Cardinals fall to 10-18 overall and 4-11 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SET ONE: The Cardinals led by as many as five late in the opening set at 22-17 and held off a rally by the Miners to win 25-22 after a kill from Maddie Wingert. 
  • SET TWO: In set two, Jewell fell behind 17-19 but followed it with an 8-3 run led by two kills a piece by Wingert and Grace Miller to take the set 25-22. 
  • SET THREE: With the set tied 14-14, the Miners went on a 5-2 run and take a 19-16 advantage. Three late errors by the Cardinals allowed Missouri S&T to run away with the set 25-19. 
  • SET FOUR: A 7-2 mid-set run by the Miners put Jewell into a six point hole at 20-14 forcing a timeout from Carolyn Raynes. The Cardinals scored three of the next four points on three kills but but couldn't overcome the deficit falling 25-18. 
  • SET FIVE: With the finale tied 6-6 Jewell got back-to-back kills from Miller and Elizabeth Quinn to grab a 8-6 advantage. However, the Miners put together a 4-0 run to swing the momentum and take a 10-8 lead. Missouri S&T scored five of the final seven points to take the set 15-11 and the match 3-2. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • After hitting .231 through the first two sets, committing just 11 total errors, Jewell struggled in the final three hitting just .111. 

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Wingert and Quinn led the Cardinals with 14 kills a piece while Johnson added nine. The trio also added five, three, and six blocks respectively. 
  • Olivia Tolberd posted a season-high 32 digs while Alix Weigel added 14.
  • Weigel also collected a double-double with 29 assists. Megan Rhule posted 21 while Tolberd chipped in five. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals travel to Truman State for their final road game of the season on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
