The William Jewell volleyball team dropped a five set heartbreaker on the road at Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon by scores of 19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 24-26, 8-15. The Cardinals drop to 5-13 overall and 2-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- SET ONE: The Cardinals and Greyhounds played even majority of the opener but a mid-set 5-1 run gave UIndy a six point lead they never relinquished taking the opener 25-19.
- SET TWO: Set two was a back-and-forth affair as neither team grabbed more than a three point advantage until late. A 4-1 run gave Jewell a 23-20 lead and two kills from Jenna Rau and Elizabeth Quinn sealed the set at 25-23.
- SET THREE: Jewell came out firing on all cylinders after the intermission taking a 17-7 lead and forcing a UIndy timeout. The Greyhounds made a small run to pull within six at 21-15 but Jewell used two kills and two UIndy errors to take the set 25-18.
- SET FOUR: The Cardinals looked at though they would take set four and the match, leading 23-21 after a kill from Quinn. However, the Greyhounds score two consecutive points to take a 24-23 lead. A kill from Maddie Wingert knotted things up at 24 but a Cardinal error and kill from UIndy pushed the Hounds to the 26-24 win and forced a fifth and deciding set.
- SET FIVE: In the finale UIndy had momentum going their way and used it to grab a 11-6 lead on their way to the 15-8 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals hit .288 during the second and third sets but managed just a .105 clip during the final two sets during which Indianapolis made their come back, hitting .333.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Paige Cunningham led the Cardinals with a double-double of 12 kills and 14 digs, while also posting two aces.
- Quinn and Rau were also in double-digits with 11 and 10 kills respectively.
- Megan Rhule collected a career high 29 assists and three service aces.
- Olivia Tolberd grabbed a game-high 23 digs.
