Cards Open 2017-18 Season With 87-68 Win Over Davenport

The William Jewell men's basketball opened the 2017 season with an 87-68 win over Davenport University tonight in the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge. Jewell moves to 1-0 overall while Davenport falls to 0-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Half: At the 13:04 mark of the first half Jewell went on a 23-6 run to build a commanding lead.  The runs was fueled by a trio of newcomers in Byron Harp, Keith Hayes, and Eysan Wiley.
  • 1st Half: Davenport fought back to pull within eight points at halftime. 
  • 2nd Half: The Panthers got to within 6 with 17:54 to play before the Cardinals went on a 19-5 run with Hayes scoring 11 of the 19.   
  • 2nd Half: Jewell would build a lead as high as 23 before winning by 19. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals never trailed the Panthers in the game.   
  • Jewell managed just 11 bench points compared to 34 by Davenport.
  • The Cardinals shot 60 percent in the second half and hit 38 percent of their shots from behind the three point line. 
  • The Cardinals out-rebounded the Panthers 33-28 and were 17-20 from the free throw line.

TURNING POINT
  • Tied 8-8, at the 13:04 mark, Jewell went on their 23-6 run to lead 31-14, a lead they did not relinquish. 

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Five players finished in double-figures for the Cardinals led by Hayes and Patrick Whelan with 22 a piece, followed by Harp with 17 and Wiley and Pharroh Gordon with 11 each. 

YOU SHOULD NOTE
  • With the win, Larry Holley records his 800th career win as the head coach at William Jewell College. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals (1-0) will continue play in the GLVC/GLIAC challenge when they take on Purdue Northwest.  Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
