The William Jewell women's basketball team opened the 2017-18 season on Wednesday night at Missouri Western where they fell 67-63. The Cardinals trailed for just over 90 seconds throughout the contest but fell to 0-1 on the young season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1Q: The Cardinals opened with a 7-0 run, capped by a transition lay up from Rhyann Fisher to force two quick timeouts from the Griffons. Jewell maintained their advantage and led 13-8 after the first ten minutes.
- 2Q: In the second frame, Missouri Western pulled within three at 21-18 before the Cardinals finished the quarter on a 13-4 run led by five points a piece from Adriana Rodriguez and Sydney Offield to take a 34-22 advantage into the locker room.
- 3Q: The Griffons opened the third frame with a 19-11 run to tie the game at 43-43 with two minutes in the quarter. A free throw by Kayla Harrell pushed Jewell back in front 46-45 just before the end of the quarter.
- 4Q: Â A 5-0 spurt capped by a big three pointer from Harrell gave Jewell a 59-54 and seemed to swing the momentum. However, the Griffons responded with an 8-0 run to grab the lead at 62-59. A free throw from Offield brought Jewell back within one but the Cardinals were forced to foul and eventually fell 67-63.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell shot better than 52 percent from the floor for the game, but the Griffons posted a 83.3 percent clip in the pivotal third quarter to tie the game.
- The Cardinals posted 16 steals but also had 24 turnovers compared to the Griffon's 13.

- The Griffons put together an 8-0 run with less than three minutes to play to take their first lead of the game, a lead they never relinquished.

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Offield paced the Cardinals with 16 points in her Cardinal debut while Harrell and Rodriguez each added 11.
- Offield and Katie Finn were tops with six rebounds, while Finn also tied her career high with six assists.
