The William Jewell College men's basketball team continued their strong start to the 2017-18 season with a 96-81 win over Southwest Baptist Saturday afternoon in Liberty, Mo. Jewell moves to 4-0 overall while Southwest Baptist drops to 1-3 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1st Half: The action went back and forth and the Cardinals took a 16-12 lead midway through the first half.
- 1st Half: The Bearcats then went on a 13-3 run and lead 25-19 with 5:58 to play. Easton Koch's three pointer keyed a 20-10 run to close the half and take a 39-35 lead with them at the half. Jewell shot 34 percent from the field in the first half and 33 percent from beyond the arc.
- 2nd Half: The Cardinals came out of the locker room with a flurry going on a 17-4 run fueled by tremendous defense in forcing four Bearcat turnovers in the first four minutes of the half and never looked back building their biggest lead of the afternoon.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinal bench outscored the SBU bench 18-10.
- Jewell held to Bearcats to only one three point basket on the afternoon and forced 18 turnovers.
- In a game that featured 53 total fouls the Cards hit 26-33 from the charity stripe.
TURNING POINT
- Chris Rossow's half court shot at the halftime buzzer was waived off and Jewell began the second half on a 17-4 run.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Byron Harp and Keith Hayes made their Mabee Center debuts and scored 23 and 22 points respectively.
- Easton Koch and Patrick Whelan were the other Cardinals in double figures with 15 and 11.
- Pharroh Gordon pulled down 10 boards for Jewell while Koch added five assists.
YOU SHOULD NOTE
- The Cardinals 4-0 start is the first 4-0 start since 2010-11.
