Strong Second Half Propels Cards to 89-75 Win Over Minnesota State Moorhead

The William Jewell College men's basketball team used a strong second half effort to remain a perfect 7-0 on the season defeating Minnesota State Moorhead this afternoon in the Drury Classic 89-75 in Springfield, Mo. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Half: Patrick Whelan's three pointer put Jewell up 10-5 with 17:57 to play in the half.   From there the Dragons went on a run and built a lead as big as 8 and led by 7 halfway through the first half. 
  • 1st Half: Jewell tied the game 32-32 with 6:49 to play only to see MSMU 14-1 run to lead by 13 and would lead 46-39 at the half. 
  • 2nd Half: The Cardinals fought back and tied the game 50-50 when Byron Harp converted a layup.  Jewell then went on a 19-8 run to build an 11 point lead with 10 minutes to play.  
  • 2nd Half: Jewell added to their momentum building a lead as big as 18 with just over four minutes to play and the Dragons were never able to threaten the rest of the way.    
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals outrebounded the Dragons 40-37.
  • Jewell held MSMU to 29 percent shooting in the second half and forced 7 of the 15 total turnovers in half number two. 
  • Patrick Whelan scored 21 of his game high 28 points in the second half going 8-11 from the field.
TURNING POINT
  • With the game tied at 50 Jewell's 19-8 run was too much for the Dragons to overcome.

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Whelan led all scores with 28. 
  • Harp and Keith Hayes were the only other Cardinals in double figures with 20 and 16 respectively.   
  • Pharroh Gordon led Jewell in rebounding with 10. 

YOU SHOULD NOTE
  • The Cardinals 7-0 start is the first 7-0 start since 1987-88. The 1987-88 team began the season 19-0. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals will begin Great Lakes Valley Conference play when they host Maryville University on Thursday, November 30.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Liberty, Mo.
