Long Range Shooting Lifts Cards over Saints 107-86

The William Jewell College men's basketball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play tonight hosting Maryville University.  The Cardinals drained 18 three pointers to defeat the Saints 107-86.  Jewell moves to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in GLVC play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Half: The Saints began the game with a 9-2 run in the first three minutes of the game.  Jewell then went on a run and took their first lead of the game 18-17 on a three pointer from Patrick Whelan.
  • 1st Half: Jewell struggled containing Maryville's Nolan Berry who scored 22 first half points but thanks to 8 first half three pointers the Cardinals led the Saints 49-42.
  • 2nd Half: Maryville came out on a 6-0 run to pull within one only to see the Cardinals go on a 16-2 run to build their biggest lead of the game 65-50 with 15:24 to play.  Jewell would build a lead as big as 17 and hit 10 more three point shots in the second half.    

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Saints outrebounded the Cardinals 42-39.
  • Jewell hit a season high 18 three pointers going 18-36. 
TURNING POINT
  • Leading 49-48 Jewell went on a 16-2 run to take control of the game.

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Whelan led the Cardinals in scoring with 25. 
  • Pharroh Gordon, Byron Harp and Keith Hayes were the other Cardinals in double figures with 24, 20 and 18 respectively.   
  • Gordon pulled down 10 boards for Jewell on the night and is averaging a double double on the season. 

YOU SHOULD NOTE
  • The Cardinals 8-0 start is the first 8-0 start since 1987-88. 
  • Maryville was picked to win the GLVC Central Division in the pre-season polls.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals will continue GLVC play as they host Quincy University on Saturday.  Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
