The William Jewell men's basketball team rallied from a late deficit to defeat Quincy University 92-81 in overtime on Saturday afternoon in the Mabee Center. The Cardinals move to 2-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play and 9-0 on the year, matching their win total from all of last season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1st Half: Both teams started slow offensively combining to score just 12 total points nearly five minutes into the game. The Cardinals turned up the heat going on a 17-5 run to take a six point advantage. The Hawks rallied to tie things up at 21 before Jewell closed the half on a 20-11 run to take a 41-32 lead into the break.
- 2nd Half: The Cardinals opened the lead up to as many as 12 before the Hawks slowly chipped away. A three point shot from Quincy's Demetrius Houston put the Hawks on top 73-72 with under 3:30 to play. After going more than five minutes without a field goal, Byron Harp used an old fashioned three point play to tie the game 75-75. A jump shot in the lane by Easton Koch put the Cards back on top 77-75 with just over a minute left in regulation. After an empty possession by the Cards, Houston rolled in a layup with 18 seconds on the clock to force overtime.
- OT: Jewell dominated the extra period, scoring the first nine points to take a 86-77 lead. The Hawks pulled within 89-81 but could get no closer as Jewell hit free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell hit seven of nine free throws in the overtime period while the Hawks managed just one of three.
- The Cardinals forced 16 turnovers which led to 24 points, compared to just eight points off turnovers by the Hawks.
- Jewell collected a season high seven blocked shots while committing just 12 fouls on the day.
TURNING POINT
- Back-to-back steals by Koch and Harp each leading to layups from Keith Hayes gave Jewell a nine point advantage in overtime that they never relinquished.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Five players finished in double figures for Jewell led by Patrick Whelan's 27. Harp added 19, Hayes 17, Eysan Wiley 13 (career-high), and Pharroh Gordon 11.
- Gordon posted a double-double, adding a team-best 10 rebounds while Harp collected six assists.
- Wiley also tied his career high with four blocks.
YOU SHOULD NOTE
- Gordon's double-double is the fifth of the season for the junior.
- The nine wins matches the win total of all of last season.
- The 9-0 start is the best since for the Cardinals since the 1987-88 season where they started 19-0.
