The William Jewell College football team traveled to Jefferson City, Mo., to take on Lincoln University in Great Lakes Valley Conference action this afternoon. The Cardinals used a strong effort defensively to defeat the Blue Tigers 13-3 and move to 2-8 overall and 2-5 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1Q (1:10) The Cards struck first when running back Chance Nelson scored his third touchdown of the season to put Jewell up 7-0.
- 3Q (00:09) Wolky Belancourt gave Lincoln their only points of the day when he drilled a 35-yard field goal.
- 4Q (07:05) Wyatt Miller caught a 20-yard pass from Brad Strauss and after Dalton Dye's PAT attempt was no good Jewell produced the winning 13-3 score.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Trejuan Mask led the Cards in rushing with 53 yards on 16 carries and he also led Jewell in receiving with seven catches for 53 yards.
- Strauss passed for 215 yards and one touchdown.
- The Cardinal defense held Lincoln to 132 total yards for the game and Quayde Bauman had nine tackles and two sacks on the afternoon.
TURNING POINT
- Leading 7-3 Andrew Pence picked off Lincoln's Drake Davidson at the Lincoln 36 and returned it 11 yards to the 25. Two plays later Strauss found Miller for the score that put the game away.
YOU SHOULD NOTE
- Lincoln did not get their first first down until 2:00 left in the second quarter and the Cardinals held the Blue Tigers to 35 total yards in the first half.
