Cardinals Down Avila 98-74

The William Jewell men's basketball team downed Avila University 98-74 on Saturday afternoon in the Mabee Center to move to 11-1 on the season while maintaining their 2-1 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1H: Jewell struggled to shake the Eagles early leading by just six with 3:06 remaining in the first half. The Cardinals closed the half on a 10-0 run led by five points from Byron Harp to take a 48-32 lead into the locker room.
  • 2H: The second half began much like the first in that every time the Cardinals looked to be pulling away the Eagles responded to stay within striking distance. After Avila pulled within 12 at 54-42, Keith Hayes went to work scoring seven of the next 14 Cardinal points to push the lead to 21 at 69-48. Jewell expanded their advantage to as many as 28 with under five remaining to ice the 98-74 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell was outscored 46-32 in the paint.
  • The Cardinals forced the Eagles into 16 turnovers leading to 17 points.

TURNING POINT
  • Back-to-back three pointers from Sean Kostyk and Patrick Whelan with just over six minutes to play put Jewell on top by 24 at 83-59.

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Patrick Whelan led all scorers with 29 points on 10-of-20 from the floor and 6-of-12 from behind the three point line while adding eight rebounds and three assists.
  • Harp collected 17 points while Hayes chipped in 14.
  • Pharroh Gordon posted his seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and a career high 16 rebounds to go along with five assists and four steals.
  • Eysan Wiley added to his GLVC leading block total with three.

YOU SHOULD NOTE
  • The Cardinals move to 11-1 for the first time since the 2010-11 season where they started the year 12-1.
  • The 16 rebounds pulled down by Gordon is the most by any Cardinal since Austin Regier's 15 vs. McKendree on January 14, 2016.
