Cards Fall 77-74 At UMSL

The No. 20 ranked William Jewell College men's basketball team dropped their first contest of the 2017-18 season falling 77-74 to Great Lake Valley Conference opponent University of Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday evening in St. Louis, Mo.   Jewell falls to 9-1 overall and 2-1 in the GLVC while the Tritons improve to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in league play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Half: After going back and forth the first five minutes UMSL went on a 15-3 run to take a 25-13 lead midway through the opening period. 
  • 1st Half: Jewell responded with a 21-8 run to close the half and found themselves tied 40-40 at intermission. 
  • 2nd Half: The lead went back and forth the first 10 minutes of the second half.   Patrick Whelan's lay up with 8:13 to play gave Jewell their last lead of the game 64-61.
  • 2nd Half: The Tritons led by three with just over a minute to play only to see the Cards cut the lead to one twice in the final minute.  UMSL was 4-4 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals who average over 10 three pointers made per game were only 6-19 from beyond the arc and 2-8 in the second half. 
  • Jewell outrebounded the Tritons 30-26 and Pharroh Gordon pulled down a game high 14.
 
TURNING POINT
  • With 13:26 to play Jewell's Byron Harp was injured and was unable to return to the lineup.  Harp is third on the team in scoring and leads the Cards in assists on the season with 30. 

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Gordon led Jewell in points with 17. 
  • Harp and senior Emil Ostafiicuic were the only other Cardinals in double figures with 15 and 10 respectively. 

YOU SHOULD NOTE
  • The game featured 10 ties and 13 lead changes. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals will return home on Saturday, December 9 to take on Calvary University.  The tip-off will take place at 1:00 p.m.
