The William Jewell men's basketball team rebounded from their first loss of the season with a big 96-53 win over Calvary University on Saturday afternoon in the Mabee Center. The win moves to the Cardinals to 10-1 on the season while maintaining their 2-1 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1st Half: The Cardinals opened the game on a 12-0 run behind two three pointers from Clark Minnifield. Another 8-0 run, capped by a layup from Eyan Wiley, pushed the lead to 18 at 28-10. Nick Bradley and Sean Kostyk got in on the scoring late in the first half to give the Cardinals their largest lead of 26 to close the first 20 minutes leading 43-17.
- 2nd Half: Jewell continued to pour it on the Warriors in the second half pushing the lead to as many as 41 as the Cardinal bench got involved. Brandon Scheer scored six consecutive points to lead the Cardinals on a 9-4 run that put the game on ice.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals out-rebounded the Warriors 55-22 and took advantage of 33 second chance points, compared to just two by Calvary.
- The Jewell bench outscored the Warriors 57-6.
TURNING POINT
- Back-to-back three point shots from Minnifield and Kostyk pushed the Cardinals from a 10 point lead to 16 early in the first half.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Scheer led the Cardinals with a career high 15 points, in just 16 minutes of play, on 4 of 6 from behind the three point line.
- Kostyk added 14 points while Minnifield posted a career best 12.
- Wiley topped Jewell with a career high 14 rebounds including 10 offensive boards. Emil Ostafiiciuc also added nine rebounds.
- Bradley collected a career high five assists and two steals.
YOU SHOULD NOTE
- Every Cardinal who appeared in the game scored at least three points.
- The win moved Jewell to ten wins on the year, giving them their first double-digit win season since 2014-15.
