Box Score 2 The William Jewell softball team downed Northwest Missouri State 5-4 before falling to Missouri Western 10-2 in five innings to split the final day of the UAM Eight State Classic in Bentonville, Ark. Jewell finished the opening weekend 2-4.
GAME 1 | JEWELL 5 - NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE 4
Jewell gunned down the tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh inning to preserve their second win of the season on Sunday afternoon. With a runner on second, Madelynne Greenstreet fielded a base hit to left field and threw the ball home to catcher
Gabby Brown. The runner attempted to score but was held up in a run down and eventually tagged out to end the game.
Earlier in the inning, the Cardinals caught a break as a would-be RBI sacrifice fly turned into a double play as the Bearcat runner was called out for leaving the base early. This play turned out to be a big one as the following Northwest batter blasted a solo home run which would have tied the game but instead helped Jewell hold on to the 5-4 lead.
Jewell grabbed the early lead for the fifth consecutive game as
Ashlyn Sutton put an RBI double into the right center field gap to score
Anna Biondo.
Sydne Brashear then scored on Brown's fielder's choice to give the Cards an early 2-0 lead. The Bearcats got on the board in the top half of the third inning on a sac fly from Rebecca Maher.
In the bottom half of the frame, Jewell opened up a three run lead as
Brooke Bernard ripped an RBI single up the middle to score Greenstreet who had also reached on a single. After a pitching change, Brashear drew a bases loaded walk to put Jewell up 4-1 after three innings.
Northwest pulled within one in the top of the fifth but the Cardinals responded in the bottom half of the inning as Bernard again sent a single up the middle, scoring
Madi Giles to give Jewell the 5-3 advantage heading into the wild seventh inning.
Overall, Jewell out hit the Bearcats 9-8, led by two each from Bernard, Sutton, and
Emily Hoover, while Giles scored two runs. Biondo earned the win in the circle to move to 2-1 on the season.
GAME 2 | JEWELL 2- MISSOURI WESTERN 10 (5 INN)
Missouri Western scored runs in first, third, sixth, and fifth inning on their way to a 10-2 run rule victory on Sunday afternoon.
In the bottom of the third, with the bases loaded, Brashear singled up the middle to score Giles who had also singled to pull Jewell within one run at 2-1. The Griffons broke the game open in the top of hte fourth, scoring six runs on five hits and one Cardinal error to open a 8-1 lead. Jewell got one run back as
Madesen Gage walked and came around to score on a double from Giles.
Missouri Western added two runs in the top of the fifth and the Cardinals went quietly through the bottom half of the frame to fall 10-2.
Greenstreet and Giles combined for four of Jewell's seven hits.
Cheyenne Carpenter took the loss on the mound to fall to 0-2 on the young season while Greenstreet and
Taylor Friesen also appeared in the circle.
Jewell returns to action next weekend as they travel to the Lewis Dome Invitational in Rosemont, Ill. where they will battle region opponents Ashland, Winona State, Walsh, and Grand Valley State.
