With a lay up in the second half junior forward
Patrick Whelan scored his 1,000th career point to join an elite club of just 41 members, one of whom is his head coach
Larry Holley. Unfortunately, the Cardinals fell short as they dropped their third straight 90-80 at Indianapolis to fall to 6-15 overall and 2-11 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Jewell came out of the gate slowly, falling behind 20-9 to force an early time out. From there the Cards went on a 16-4 run to pull ahead 25-24 with just under ten minutes to play in the opening half. The two teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the half before Jewell grabbed a 44-39 lead at the break.
After taking a seven point advantage on a three by
Easton Koch the Greyhounds went on a 23-6 run to grab 63-53 lead with 12:05 to play. The Cardinals did not go quietly however as seven points from
Patrick Whelan aided by another Koch three, helped Jewell tied the game at 63 just over two minutes later. UIndy was not able to separate themselves by more than six until the final minute when the Cardinals were down by five, 85-80, but committed two turnovers which helped pushed the Greyhound lead to the final margin of 90-80.
As a team the Cardinals shot 40 percent from the floor but just 28 percent from behind the three point line and were not able to keep pace with the Greyhounds who connected on 60 percent of their shot attempts. Jewell did win the battle on the boards as they out-rebounded UIndy 40-32.
Along the way to his career milestone, Whelan posted a game-high 25 points to lead four Cardinals in double-figures.
Jorge Perez-Laham added 17, to go along with six rebounds and five assists. Emil Ostafiicuic poured in 14 points and nine boards while Koch posted ten points.
Up next for the Cardinals is a match up with Saint Joseph's on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
