The William Jewell baseball team was swept in a double header at the hands of McKendree on Friday afternoon in Lebanon, Ill. The Cardinals fell by scores of 10-6 and 3-0 to drop Jewell to 5-6 overall.
GAME ONE | McKendree 10 - Jewell 6
In the opener, Jewell outhit their opponent 19-11 but left a season-high 13 men on base. The Cardinals struck early as
Zach Saalfeld singled to right field to score
Brad Jelinek who reached on a fielder's choice to take a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom the second, the Bearcats responded with four runs on four hits before Jewell pulled within one on a sac fly from
Dylan Christie and an RBI double from freshman
Ben Pautler.
Tyler Carpenter led off the fourth inning with a two-strike single to left field before a walk to
Brendan Carney and a single from
Garrett McKinzie loaded the bases for Jelinek. The senior third baseman came through with a sac fly to center to score Carpenter and tie the game at four.
In the following frame, the Cards took a 5-4 lead as
Tanner Foerschler singled to score Saalfeld. The lead was short lived however, as McKendree responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
The Bearcats added two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh before
Drew Standifer's solo shot in the eighth brought the score to the final of 10-6.
The Cardinals posted a season-best 19 hits led by three a piece from McKinizie, Saalfeld, and Carpenter. Jelinek also had two hits and two runs.
Zach Hutcherson (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season after four and two-thirds innings of work, allowing six hits and four earned runs.
GAME TWO | McKendree 3 - Jewell 0
In the nightcap the Bearcats scored three runs in the fourth inning and held Jewell to just three hits to earn the win.
The Cards had one hit in each of the first three innings before the bats fell silent. McKinzie had two hits, including a first inning double while Saalfeld finished with a single.
Brendan Beatty took the loss to drop to 1-3 on the year after going six innings, allowing just five hits, and three earned runs. McKendree starter Nick Yung went seven innings with eight strikeouts.
The Cardinals will travel to Northwest Missouri State on Wednesday for a nine-inning contest before returning home to host Northern State Friday-Sunday for a three game series at Talley Stadium.
