The William Jewell Baseball team dropped a nine-inning non-conference match up at Northwest Missouri State on Thursday by a final of 4-3. The loss drops Jewell to 5-7 overall.
The Cardinals came out firing in the first inning as
Drew Standifer took the second pitch of the game over the left center field wall to give Jewell the very early 1-0 lead.
Garrett McKinzie followed with a double to left and came around to score as
Dylan Christie roped a double of his own to left center field.
The Bearcats got one run back in the bottom half of the frame as Jewell committed two errors in the inning.
In the top of the fifth
Brad Jelinek put the Cardinals up by two runs with an RBI single to right field, scoring
Tyler Carpenter who had singled to lead off the inning.
The 3-1 score held until the bottom of the ninth where Jewell pitching walked four batters before Northwest's Landon Figg sent a two RBI single up the middle for the walk off 4-3 win.
Eric Smith (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing one earned in one-third innings of work. Starter
Vijay Patel received a no-decision despite going six strong, giving up just five hits, three walks, and one unearned run, while tying his career high with seven strikeouts.
Jewell outhit the Bearcats 10-7 led by three from Jelinek.
Up next the Cardinals will open a three-game series with Northern State University (S.D) Friday-Sunday. The first pitch between the Cards and Wolves will be Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Jack Talley Stadium.
