Box Score The William Jewell College baseball team began the first of a three game set with Northern State University today at Talley Stadium in Liberty, Mo. 

Northern State used a strong pitching performance from Nick Hoffard (1-1) and outhit the Cardinals to 17-11 to earn the 12-5 victory.  The win moves NSU to 6-4 overall while Jewell falls to 5-8 on the season. 

The Wolves got on the board in the top of the second after pitcher Brendan Beatty (1-4) allowed the first two batters on.  After two quick outs Beatty allowed a balk and two straight doubles that put Northern State up 3-0. 

Jewell threatened in the bottom of the second and had the bases loaded with one out but the Wolves were able to escape with no runs allowed. 

Northern State added on to their lead in the top of the third when they sent 10 men to the plate and scored four runs.  In addition, Beatty was knocked out of the game for the Cardinals giving up 7 runs on 9 hits.

In the top of the fifth the Wolves scored two runs on four hits and added two more in the seventh to lead 11-0. 

Jewell finally got on the board off a two-run double from Garrett McKinzie in the bottom of the seventh and scored three more off Travis Foerschler's single and an error on center fielder Tyler Gripentrog to trail 11-5.

NSU added another run in the ninth for the 12-5 winning margin. 

Drew Standifer was 3-for-3 on the day with a run score and McKinzie finished with two RBI's. 

Hofford pitched six scoreless innings with four strikeouts to earn the victory for Northern State.

The Cardinals and Wolves will continue with game two of the series tomorrow at Talley Stadium.  The first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
