The William Jewell College baseball team dropped game two of the three-game set with Northern State University this afternoon at Talley Stadium in Liberty, Mo.
NSU used a huge 10 run fifth inning to down the Cardinals and improve to 7-4 overall while Jewell drops their fifth straight to fall to 5-9.
The Cardinals got on the board first today in the bottom on the second when
Brendan Carney singled off pitcher Louie Carlos' leg that scored
Tyler Carpenter.
Drew Standifer followed with a sacrifice fly that scored
Ben Pautler to put Jewell up 2-0 after two.
The Wolves tied the game in the top of the third when they took advantage of two Cardinal errors that scored two runs with two outs in the inning.
Jewell regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Pautler's single scored
Tanner Foerschler who led off the inning with a double. Standifer increased Jewell's lead with a two-out double that scored Foerschler and put the Cards up 4-2 heading to the fifth.
NSU put a big inning together in the top of the fifth when Lucas Lorenz hit a double to center field that plated three runs after pitcher
Zach Hutcherson walked in a batter. Ben Allen added to the lead with a single to center that scored Lorenz and put the Wolves up 7-4. Wyatt Schultz who came in for Hutcherson walked a run in and
Derek Thurman replaced Schultz and walked in two more batters that put the Wolves up 10-4. Jack Schmidt hit a two run single, his third RBI of the inning that put the lead to 12-4 heading to the bottom of the fifth.
Jewell plated two runs on four hits in bottom of the sixth to cut it to 12-6 and three more in the bottom of the seventh to make things interesting at 12-9.
The Wolves tacked on a single run in the eighth for a 13-9 lead and put the game away in the ninth when they tacked on four more for the 17-9 win.
Lorenz led the Wolves going 3-for-6 with six RBI's.
Hutcherson took the loss for Jewell lasting 4.1 innings giving up six hits, and seven runs while walking two. Cardinal pitchers on the afternoon ended up walking 12 NSU batters.
Standifer led Jewell going 3-for-4 with four RBI's and two runs scored.
Thomas Sertic, 2-0 on the year, earned the win in relief of starter Louie Carlos.
The Cardinals and Wolves will wrap up the three game set tomorrow at Talley Stadium. First-pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
