The William Jewell College baseball team swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader over Rockhurst University, defeating the Hawks in the opener, 5-3, and then nipping Rockhurst, 2-0 in the nightcap.
The Cardinals improve to 9-11 overall and 3-1 in the GLVC after the sweep.
Rockhurst, which drops to 13-11 overall and 1-3 in the GLVC, lost the second game despite a strong game from starting righthander Andrew Ellwanger, who allowed two runs and four hits in 6 innings.
Junior right hander
Brendan Beatty (2-4) was brilliant in the second game for Jewell, allowing just six hits and striking out 8, without a walk in nine innings for the complete game shutout.
In the first game, Jewell led, 3-0 heading into the top of the third thanks two a two-run double from
Drew Standifer. The Hawks answered back with three of their own in frame to tie it up 3-3.
The Cards plated home single runs in the third and fifth for the 5-3 winning margin.
For Jewell, starting righthander
Mack Stephenson (3-0) got the win, pitching six innings and allowing three runs on six hits.
Eric Smith came in to record his fourth save of the season for the Cards.
Standifer was 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the opener for Jewell.
William Jewell will travel to Wayne, Neb., on Wednesday, March 29 for a nine inning game with Wayne State. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
