Jewell Combines for 36 Hits in Doubleheader Sweep of UMSL

The William Jewell College baseball team swept a doubleheader from host University of Missouri-St. Louis Saturday afternoon in St. Louis, Mo.  The Cards took game one 17-5 and edged the Tritons 6-5 in game two.  The wins improved the Cardinals to 12-11 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

In Game 1, UMSL jumped out to a 3-0 with two runs in the first and one in the second. Jewell responded with three in the top of the fourth, one in the fifth, four in the sixth, three in the seventh followed by six in the ninth. 

Ben Pautler led the offensive charge in game one going 4-for-6 with four RBI's and three runs scored including a homerun in the ninth. Brad Jelinek, Dylan Chrisite,
Drew Standifer, Tyler Carpenter and Brendan Carney all collected three hits for Jewell. 

Vijay Patel (2-1), hurled 8 innings giving up 10 hits and five runs while striking out 10.   

In Game 2, the Cardinals got out to a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first, second and sixth respectively.  The Tritons tied the game 3-3 with three runs in the bottom of the seventh and the game remained scoreless after nine. 

Jewell manufactured three runs in the top of the 11th before UMSL made things interesting scoring two in the bottom of the frame but the Cards were able to hang on for the one run win. 

Tanner Foerschler was the offensive leader in game two going 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

On the mound, Mack Stephenson started and went 6.2 solid innings.  Eric Smith earned his first win in relief and Garrison Fields picked up his first save of the season.   

The Cardinals will resume their four game series with UMSL tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
